Route
I knew I wanted to start where I live and finish where I grew up. Good thing both are very close to different oceans. The "in between" route was selected based on a number of side trips Tish and I want to make along the way. We’re looking forward to rest days at the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forrest, Santa Fe, St. Louis, Mammoth Cave & Charlottesville, and spending time with friends and family in D.C, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. Tish will also make trips to Dallas and South Carolina when we hit a few middle-of-nowhere portions of the route.
We’ll cover approximately 3,400 miles across 11 states. Total elevation gain will be somewhere around 90,000 feet. There will be about 50 days of riding, and I’ll average 65-70 miles a day. We start at the end of April at Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla—one of the most idyllic beaches in the world. We finish in Manasquan, NJ—a favorite Wussler Shore destination from way back when—sometime towards mid- or late-June depending on the weather. We’re going to camp along the way and also frequent what invariably will be divey motels off the beaten path. I’ll be on my own for about 20 of the nights.
